Projected Changes in Hot, Dry, and Compound Hot‐Dry Extremes Over Global Land Regions

چکیده

The impacts of hot, dry, and compound hot-dry extremes are significant for societies, economies, ecosystems worldwide. Such events therefore need to be assessed in the light anthropogenic climate change so that suitable adaptation measures can implemented by governments stakeholders. Here we show a comprehensive analysis over global land regions using 25 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 models four future emissions scenarios from 1950 2100. Hot, projected increase large parts globe end 21st century. Hot most widespread increases dry extreme changes sensitive index used. Many regional depend on strength greenhouse-gas forcing, which highlights potential limit with strong mitigation efforts.

Changes in Extremely Hot Summers over the Global Land Area under Various Warming Targets

Summer temperature extremes over the global land area were investigated by comparing 26 models of the fifth phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) with observations from the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) and the Climate Research Unit (CRU). Monthly data of the observations and models were averaged for each season, and statistics were calculated for individual mo...

Global land moisture trends: drier in dry and wetter in wet over land

The "dry gets drier, wet gets wetter" (DGDWGW) paradigm is widely accepted in global moisture change. However, Greve et al. have declared that this paradigm has been overestimated. This controversy leaves a large gap in the understanding of the evolution of water-related processes. Here, we examine the global moisture trends using satellite soil moisture for the past 35 years (1979-2013). Our r...

Projected Changes in Temperature Extremes in China Using PRECIS

Temperature extremes can cause disastrous impacts on ecological and social economic systems. China is very sensitive to climate change, as its warming rate exceeds that of the global mean level. This paper focused on the spatial and temporal changes of the temperature extremes characterized by the 95th percentile of maximum temperature (TX95), the 5th percentile of the minimum temperature (TN5)...

Global Climate Responses to Land Use and Land Cover Changes Over the Past Two Millennia

A reconstructed land use/land cover change (LUCC) dataset was used with the Community Earth System Model (CESM) to conduct a climate sensitivity analysis over the past two millennia. Compared to a controlled experiment conducted with the CESM, the LUCC showed significant biogeophysical effects on global climate on multi-decadal to centennial time scales. The global annual mean temperature and p...

The influence of mid-latitude storm tracks on hot, cold, dry and wet extremes

Changes in mid-latitude circulation can strongly affect the number and intensity of extreme weather events. In particular, high-amplitude quasi-stationary planetary waves have been linked to prolonged weather extremes at the surface. In contrast, analyses of fast-traveling synoptic-scale waves and their direct influence on heat and cold extremes are scarce though changes in such waves have been...
